Sochi hockey club was founded in 2014.
The decision to found an ice hockey club in Sochi was announced right after the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, for which a large-scale sports infrastructure was constructed.
At the general meeting of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) Board on April 30, 2014 the club, representing the Krasnodar Region, was admitted to the strongest ice hockey league of the continent. Almost immediately, the formation of the team began. The team players signed their first contracts in May and on June 17, 2014 HC Sochi participated in the second expansion draft in the history of the KHL and selected three players.
The club held its first-ever game on August 9, 2014. It was a test match with HC Kuban , playing in the Supreme Hockey League (VHL), with which Sochi hockey club signed a partnership agreement. HC Sochi made its debut in the Kontinental Hockey League on September 6, 2014. The first rival of the Sochi team was SKA from Saint-Petersburg.
HC Sochi has a number of special projects. In August 2016 the first open ice hockey tournament Sochi Hockey Open was held, featuring apart from our team, CSKA, SKA and the Russian Olympic team. A year later the tournament became more representative due to the participation of SKA, Metallurg from Magnitogorsk, Kunlun Red Star from China, the Russian Olympic team and the Canadian national team.
In the summer of 2017 HC Sochi organized the first children's sports camp Sochi Junior Hockey Camp for young players. Nolan Howe was the SHJC head coach in 2017 and 2018, in 2019 the training process is headed by Mike Asselin, who was previously the head coach assistant. Participants can use the team’s main locker room and enjoy all the benefits of professional players - sports facilities, a canteen, equipment repair, medical and even laundry services. All these conditions allows them to feel the atmosphere of the KHL's club.
